Peru - Our First-ever Trip with Starkey Hearing Foundation

Our first-ever trip with Starkey Hearing Foundation, where we helped 10,000 people

In August of 2013 we accomplished a huge milestone: our first trip with Starkey Hearing Foundation. Traveling with them to Peru was a profound experience, and it's certainly one we'll never forget.

Our trip took us to Piura and Chiclayo, both on Peru's northwest coast. Piura is the oldest Spanish city in Peru, founded in 1532 by Francisco Pizarro. Piura is known for its ceviche, and we can attest to the fact that it is delicious. Chiclayo, home to over 500,000 people, sits near the ruins of the 7th centry Wari Empire. Learning about the huge number of different cultures (and cuisines) of the places we go is one of the best parts of doing what we do.

“I got to see the look on her face when she heard her mom say "I love you" for the first time...it makes everything that we do so worth it every time you see someone's life just change in front of you.”
— Bridget Hilton, LSTN Founder

One of our favorite people to help in Piura was Maria. Her mom had driven her to the fitting as an 18th birthday surprise. Watch her reaction as she's able to hear her mom for the first time:

We met a 108-year-old woman who had been disconnected from the world of sound for longer than she could remember. Surrounded by multiple generations of her family, the remarkable matriarch was overjoyed to be able to hear their joy as she gazed in awe of her loving family. She proved without a doubt that you are never too old for the gift of hearing.
